Super 8 ciné films from the past!
Although not having anything to do with Old Bridgend, I have included these old ciné films on my website as they show what I was involved with and interested in during the 1970s and early 80s.
These films are not very good quality but do give a flavour of the era. They were all shot on Super 8 ciné film on a cheap (but expensive to me) movie camera I purchased in January of 1973.
The film was transferred to VHS video sometime in the 1990s and I have recently recorded that video onto DVD. The films are all hosted on an external website - hope you enjoy them!

1973 Jane Hodge Holiday Home 1974 Picketston Steam Rally 1974 Pentwyn School

From 1968 to 1974 I worked at the Jane Hodge Holiday Home at Trerhyngyll in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. The home was dedicated to providing short term "holidays" or respite care for disabled children of all abilities. Some of the youngsters were severely disabled, others not so, indeed sometimes it was hard to tell they had any form of disability at all. This film is not very good quality but does give a flavour of the era and of some indication of what the home was all about.

Super 8 ciné film of the 1974 Picketston Steam & Vintage Rally held near the village of Picketston, St Athan in South Wales. From September 1974 until November 1975 I was employed as a residential worker at Pentwyn School near Cardiff. Although I was taken on to look after the children who lived at school during the week, in reality I had no real job as no children actually slept there! This film shows some of the activities leading up to Christmas in 1974.
1977 Doddington Steam Rally 1977 A Camping Holiday in Wales 1977 The Lake District (1)
Recorded on ciné film at the 4th Doddington Steam & Vintage Fair in 1977 it features, from time to time, three of the boys from the children's home at which I worked at that time. There is also a shot of one of the boys starting my Lister stationary engine whilst the other two look on. The film closes with a view of one of the lads about to have a ride on the carousel.

A short segment from a ciné film made in 1977. It shows a group of young girls on holiday in South Wales enjoying a chilly day at Oxwich Bay. Scenes include one of the girls jumping waves in their wellies. The girls were all living at the children's home in London where I worked at that time.

Meet the boys!

The first part of a ciné film made whilst on holiday in the Lake District with a small group of youngsters that I worked with in the 1970s. The whole film only lasts about 10 minutes but it has been cut into smaller segments. This first part introduces the boys and shows them wandering down a river in typically wet British summer weather!

At the campsite

Rain is always a possibility when camping in the Lake District, but the sun does shine as well! This is another segment from the film I took in the summer of 1977 and shows the boys playing games at the campsite at Coniston Water and messing about at the lakeside.

Braving the icy water!

Another clip from the 1977 ciné film I took whilst on a camping trip with the lads Iworked with at that time. Here you some of them running from the campsite down to the water's edge at Coniston to swim in the icy water.

On the "Ratty"!

The final part of the 1977 Lake District holiday movie I took when I worked at a children's home in the mid 1970s. It shows the boys having fun on the Ravenglass & Eskdale railway.

1980 The Lake District 1980 Mynyddislwyn  1980 Kenfig Hill Show

A short film made in 1980 showing a young boy on holiday from London during his first attempts at fishing. The location is Coniston Water in the Lake District.

A few short scenes from a ploughing match I attended in March 1980 with one of my stationary engines. It shows a couple of friends of the period chatting together about their engines followed by a few shots of vintage tractors ploughing.

A short film showing young enthusiasts demonstrating their parent's vintage machinery. The orange contraption demonstrated in turn by a girl and boy (brother and sister) is a washing machine. Filmed at the Kenfig Hill & District annual horse show in July 1980.
1980 St Fagans Rally 1980 Bridgend Show 1980 Alexandra Palace Rally
A stationary engine rally organised by the Glamorgan & Gwent Group of the National Vintage Tractor & Engine Club, of which I was the secretary at the time. The short film opens with a sequence of views of my large Lister type N stationary engine. Scenes of other engines follow and a shot or two of my friends and associates of that era. The film closes with the firing up of a large Blackstone engine. When all the visitors have gone home after a busy show, then the exhibitors get to play. Here we see one of my friends learning to drive her husband's vintage Fordson Tractor. The location is interesting as this field has now been enveloped in an athletics circuit. Film of the 1980 Alexandra Palace Steam Rally and Victorian Fair. This was the year the Palace suffered a disastrous fire and some shots show the fire damaged building in the background. At various times during the film you will see shots of one of my stationary engines, a Lister type L, the film ends on this machine.
1980 Parvills Farm 1980 Little West Crank Up 1980 Tredegar Park Vintage Rally
A very short film made at Parvills, the farm of my father's cousin at Epping Upland in Essex at the end of summer in 1980. The film opens with a view of the historic farm house and then shows a derelict Marshall threshing machine which i was told I could have. The film concludes with a farm elevator driven by a Lister type D stationary engine. A small meet of stationary engines and their owners held in the car park of Little West Residential Home in 1980. At the time I lived at Little West and events of this nature were held from time to time. A few years later a narrow gauge railway was built around the perimeter of this site. The film shows a number of my engines and some of those belonging to my friends. Some of the persons shown in this film have sadly passed away. A very short film of the stationary engine section of the 1980 Tredegar Park Vintage Rally in 1980. I believe this was the very first rally to be held in the park, a rally which continues to be held to this day but is now a very much larger and grander affair. The stationary engine section was organised by the Glamorgan and Gwent Group of the National Vintage Tractor & Engine Club (NVTEC) of which I was the local secretary at the time. The very last engine in the film was mine, a 1919 Lister type L.

  NVTEC National Rally
The 1980 National Rally of the National Vintage Tractor & Engine Club (NVTEC) held on 11th & 12th October 1980 at Spittal Moor Farm, Bothamsall, Nottinghamshire. Originally filmed on Super 8 ciné film.
